The weather here in Sydney, Australia has begun to cool down and it’s time to start layering. For me, this is a new way of styling.
For many years I’ve opted for oversized and shapeless garments that held no flattering qualities whatsoever. This year I am learning, taking little steps to showcase my body in ways that are vintage, retro and yet still practical.

I can simplify this down to adding soft, fine knits to my outfit and adding layers under tops to keep the chill at bay! I am living in this simply, yet ever so versatile bolero from plus-size retailer City Chic. It’s long sleeves and cropped style mean it works well over my full dresses, but it can easily be worn with a top or peplum over jeans or skirts.

Almost everything in this outfit is new to my wardrobe, and I’m very excited to share it on Closet Confessions.
This skirt is both dreamy and fun, and is yet again another addition to my closet from Pinup Couture.
The Jenny skirt is a firm favourite of mine (I’ve featured one of my Jenny skirts, in fan print on the blog before) and I now own atleast 4 different prints in this style! What I love about it is the shape, the waistband holds such a large amount of fullness, and even without a petticoat I feel elegant and graceful!

The Harlequin print is a new release from Pinup Girl Clothing, a new colourway release from their ever-popular white based print. Three new colours, including a purple and red and the black I am wearing can be sourced in tops, dresses and skirts just like mine. When I heard that Your One Stop Pinup Shop was getting this skirt in, I raced over to their store to try one on. It was beautiful and it went straight on lay buy!

The print has such a great range of colours, which means I can wear so many different options with it. Here, I am wearing a simple cotton halter top that matches one of the burgandy shapes. Along with simple black, it is easy to style with teal, milk, pale blue, pink, red and even cream. Perfect!

IMG_8709The skirt I am wearing is in a 2xl, which is the normal size I wear from Pinup Couture, and ideally I would have liked to have it in a XL. At the moment, this skirt fits like a dream, but soon I fear it will be too big!
An easy remedy I have for this is adding a belt, and I just added a minty-blue belt I had at home. I’ve worn this with a black wide belt as well and it looks wonderful!

The halter top I am wearing is by Chic Star and was a recent purchase from Your One Stop Pinup Shop. They are currently 40% off, bringing them down to only $15!I bought this colour just to wear with my harlequin print, and also grabbed a black & white spot version. I am wearing these in a size 20, as I found there was a big difference in the bust between the 18 and 20! If you order, double check your measurements!

I kept the rest of my accessories very simple with this outfit, with a set of double roses in my hair, an Erstwilder brooch and a pair of red small wedges. Because this print is so bold, I decided to keep away from adding another feature of a necklace, although looking back, a simple strand of beads would not have been too bad! Styling such a bold, eye-catching print can be a scary task but sticking to simple, clean additions and plain colours makes your outfit work. I can’t wait to team this beautiful skirt with a white blouse and red heels, a black blouse and a pink belt and I would even give a pink top a go, and make it super girly! Who knows!?

My hair was curled using foam rollers overnight, set only with water. They’ve certainly fallen out here, but still happy with the volume!
